Roscoe - this really resonated with me even though I’ve never stepped foot in an AA meeting. I have almost 4 years of sobriety and DO work a program (TLC - The Luckiest Club). All the meetings are online and I’ve had that same sort of thing happen to me - when I drift away from being on meetings my mind gets really comfortable settling into the dark corners.

These days, when I do go to meetings it’s not because I feel “drinky” or worried about picking up. I go because I feel too “thinky”.

Thanks for putting words to this. Reading this today helped me. 🫶

“my mind gets really comfortable settling into the dark corners.”

I hear you there.

Thank you for reading and commenting 🙏

I’m glad it was able to help :)

*I just realised I hit comment and not reply! I hope you didn't think I'd ignored your comment.

No worries at all, Roscoe. I do the same in my responses sometimes - my mind is eager to respond but my hand doesn’t hit the right button!

I appreciate you circling back and for what you shared here.

I so feel what you're saying about "there's something greater than us watching over those rooms".

I've gone to AA, AL-ANON, Celebrate Recovery, and other various recovery groups and EVERY SINGLE TIME I have more peace when I walk out of there. Even if I didn't speak, just the power and connection of being in those rooms...can't even explain it. 💜👊

I've experienced AA and did not find it helpful. I am attempting to get help now through an online outpatient program. I struggle with cynical thoughts that the addictions treatment for profit industry is not much different than a pay day loan shop taking advantage of the working poor.

I had those same cynical thoughts and I don’t think you’re wrong to dismiss them but not every place is the same and you could potentially find sobriety in an unlikely place. Keep searching. Although, hopefully the online outpatient program helps. AA is definitely not the only way to get sober. Sending positive thoughts your way 🙏

I’m 55 Days sober and went to my first ever AA meeting this week. And I’ll be doing it again tonight as today is a particularly rough day for me.

Congrats on your sobriety, Nate. Keep going. You can do this 💪 I know you’re going through a rough time at the moment but getting sober is a major positive, because the other option will not help you. Take care of yourself mate 🙏

Yep, I’ve decided the best way to face the toughest stretch of my life is stone cold sober. And the journey will never end.

I’ve been slackin’ on AA since April and starting to notice more dry drunk behaviors & thinking as time passes. I 100% feel ya and plan to get back to a few meetings. In person meets are a salve.

I’m glad it resonated with you.

It’s funny you mentioned behaviours and thinking of a “dry drunk”. I’d heard that term during the year and a half I was in AA at the start and didn’t really believe it, but I do now!!

Keep in touch and let me know if you make it to a meeting :)
