Welcome back!
Every time I sit down to write, my mind is instantly flooded with hundreds of thoughts.
I have always had a plethora of things floating around my head and for a long time, they were not always useful. To be honest, if my thoughts are negative now, it’s usually the poisonous remnants of years of self-hatred and boozy blackouts, or because I want to open up a discussion via this newsletter.
I've written before about staying out of your own head because sometimes your mind has the power to work against you - especially if you're struggling mentally or trying to overcome an addiction.
The power your thoughts have over you is something that many fail to consider when they are trying to vanquish their demons or when they are trying to restore some inner peace.
If your mind has been used to thinking negatively from years of destructive inner dialogue, you're unlikely to be able to get past this until you consciously start communicating with yourself with kindness and start practising self-care.
Spilling out
Among the thoughts that fly around my head when I'm about to write is; how much darkness is going to bleed through my fingers and into these words?
How much of the negativity from years of trauma and chaos is going to make it onto the screen of those reading this?
This is a constant thought process before writing these newsletters. I don’t want to overwhelm you with raw content but I also want to be honest and write what is on my mind.
Believe me, it is never my intention to write things that sound dark or depressing, my aim has always been to help those who need it. But the process of opening up my mind in order to provide helpful content, inevitability means that some of my past, unresolved ‘drinking days’ darkness spills out into my words.
Get out of your head and out of your own way
So, for those of you trapped with dark thoughts or who battle sporadic pangs of depression and despair, you need to find a way to get yourself out of your own head before you self-destruct.
Easy said than done, I know!
A good place to start is with your internal dialogue, what are you constantly saying to yourself and is it helpful?
The words you say to yourself are important.
Some of you may have been talking to yourself like a piece of shit for a long time. Some of you may have dabbled in debauchery for too long and find yourself unable to kick the thinking that leads to your destructive habits and behaviours.
This is where positive action comes into play. Conscious positive action and self-care.
You need to flip your own thoughts so that when you're left in a situation where you're alone with them, they're not working against you and you're able to go CONQUER YOUR DAY.
Daily POSITIVE affirmations are a great way to alter the things you say to yourself.
By repeating uplifting things about yourself, day in and day out, you will eventually find that they become part of your self rhetoric.
Also, by eliminating the need for ruminating and sitting with your thoughts for too long, either by finding wholesome hobbies, cultivating passions or filling your time purposefully, you'll find that the poison evaporates from your mind and is instead replaced by totally different things to think about.
Hobbies are underrated.
Conclusion
A few changes to the way you speak to yourself will help shape the way you think.
It's a long hard road, as I can attest to, but a rewarding one in the long run.
For me, when I sit with my thoughts in order to write these newsletters, I know that thoughts from my drinking days are going to come up, or from the years of negative habit-forming, but normally because of the way I like to write, and the message I want to convey to those who may be struggling, it calls for me to bring these things to the forefront.
I also know, however, that if I lapse back into negative self-dialogue or ditch my positive new routines & habits then I will not write, I will stop looking after myself and I risk allowing the negative thoughts to sneak-attack the positive ones that have taken their place.
You need to consider that the destructive thoughts may always be there, unless you do some deep psychological work to try to get to the root of your problems, but they can easily be kept at bay by the positive habits you put in place to help yourself.
Talk to yourself with kindness, do good deeds and start building yourself up.
Protect your mental health and start looking after yourself.
Thank you for reading “Words Are Important”.
I appreciate the positive responses I got from my last newsletter “Media Life Ponderings”.
Take care,
Roscoe
